- Virginia / United States : FBI agent Robert Hanssen loses documents on a public street exposing his 15 years of espionage for the Soviet Union and Russia . Hanssen is finally tracked down and arrested in a park.

- Neustadt an der Weinstrasse / Germany : The heads of government of Germany, France and Poland are meeting for the third time in the context of the so-called “ Weimar Triangle ”. The German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder describes the three states as the “hard core” of “ Europe in the process of being built ”.

- Selby District / United Kingdom : In a train accident in the community of Great Heck, an express train drives into an off-road vehicle with a trailer and derails. A freight train then drives to the scene of the accident. At least 13 people are killed and 82 others are seriously injured.
