- Brussels / Belgium , Skopje / Macedonia : The interim trade agreement between the European Union and Macedonia comes into force. The entry into force of the Stabilization and Association Agreement , which has also been agreed, is not yet in sight.
- Kathmandu / Nepal : According to official information , a son of the reigning King of Nepal since 1972 murdered his father King Birendra and almost the entire ruling family.

- New York / United States : At the 55th Tony Awards , Mary-Louise Parker and Richard Easton are each recognized for best performance in a leading role in a play .

- Atlantic : The 2001 Atlantic hurricane season begins when the Allison low pressure area intensifies into a tropical cyclone after it emerged from a tropical wave in the northern Gulf of Mexico . Allison's route points towards the Texas city of Houston .
- Kathmandu / Nepal : Prince Gyanendra becomes the new king after a mass murderer three days ago almost wiped out the entire royal family, including King Birendra, who was reigning up to that moment . Gyanendra is his younger brother. After the coronation riots break out.
Thursday June 7, 2001
- London / United Kingdom : In the election for the lower house , the ruling loses the Labor Party (LP) of Prime Minister Tony Blair 2,5% share of votes compared to the last election . The Conservative Party with opposition leader William Hague gained 1.0%. The LP continues to hold an absolute majority in parliament.

- Tehran / Iran : The as liberal force President Mohammad Khatami is with about 77% of the votes re-elected .

- Denver / United States : The Stanley Cup of the North American professional ice hockey league NHL goes to the Colorado Avalanche team this year . In the decisive seventh game of the final series , the hosts got the upper hand against defending champions New Jersey Devils 3-1.

- Basel / Switzerland : Servette FC from Geneva wins the final of the Swiss Cup in football 3-0 against Yverdon-Sport FC in the St. Jakob-Park stadium .
- Milan / Italy : The overall winner of the 84th edition of the wheel - stage race Giro d'Italia goes to the Italians Gilberto Simoni . It is his first overall victory on this tour and the 59th for an Italian.

- Berlin / Germany : The CDU proposes that the Governing Mayor of Berlin no longer be elected by MPs, but directly by the people.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The 29th German Evangelical Church Congress under the motto "You put my feet in a wide space" begins.
- Stuttgart / Germany : The state parliament of Baden-Württemberg elects Erwin Teufel ( CDU ) as prime minister for the fourth time since January 1991 . The coalition government consisting of the CDU and FDP / DVP can continue.

- Gothenburg / Sweden : The two-day meeting of the European Council of the European Union begins.
- Hauzenberg / Germany : The business administration student Matthias Vogl and the electrical engineering student Christian Wimmer start the social network “ Singletreffen.net ”.

- Berlin / Germany : The Governing Mayor Eberhard Diepgen ( CDU ) is removed from office by a vote of no confidence in the wake of the Berlin banking scandal . The House of Representatives elects the SPD politician Klaus Wowereit as his successor .

- Sofia / Bulgaria : In the parliamentary elections , the “Movement Simeon II” with top candidate Simeon Sakskoburggotski becomes the strongest force.

- Southern Africa : During the total solar eclipse , the sun is covered by the moon for almost five minutes over the Atlantic near Angola . The umbra of the moon also hits Madagascar , Mozambique , Zambia and Zimbabwe .

- Berlin / Germany : The Federal Government reaches an agreement with the Prime Ministers of the countries of the accession area from 1990 on the modalities of the Second Solidarity Pact .
- Berlin / Germany : The German Film Prize in Gold is awarded to Die Innere Sicherheit by director Christian Petzold .
- Italy : The police arrest the Volxtheaterkarawane .
- Kerala / India : The Mangalore Mail train from Mangalore to Chennai derails on the bridge over the Kadalundi River and falls into the water. 57 people die and at least 230 are injured.
Sunday June 24, 2001
- Tirana / Albania : Ilir Meta from the Socialist Party of Albania (SPA) is confirmed as head of government in the first round of parliamentary elections . Runoff elections are scheduled for July 8th in 45 constituencies where voters do not give any candidate an absolute majority. However, they will not change the SPA's election victory.

- Belgrade / Yugoslavia : The government is extraditing Slobodan Milošević , the former President of the Yugoslav Republic of Serbia and former President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to the International Criminal Court in The Hague .
- Bucharest / Romania : The country is given observer status in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development .
