Jappy is a German social network . It was founded in June 2001 and sees itself as a network for friends. According to the platform's own statements, the members come from all over German-speaking countries, with a focus on metropolitan areas . Until 2011, Jappy concentrated exclusively on the German-speaking area, from June 2011 there was also an English version of the platform. In March 2013, Jappy was ranked 16th among social networks in Germany with a good 1.5 million active users. According to the operator, there were still almost 240,000 registered users at the beginning of October 2018. In January 2019, just over 230,000 members were expelled.

history

In 2001, business administration student Matthias Vogl and electrical engineering student Christian Wimmer founded an online service under the name Singletreffen.net . This is where users should be able to flirt online. A year later the network was renamed Jappy.tv , and three years later Jappy.de . The name Jappy is a fantasy name; Jappy was the pseudonym of an employee of the exile edition of the German satirical magazine Simplicissimus . In 2006 the network had over 100,000 members and was converted from a GbR into a GmbH. In November 2008, Jappy passed the one million member mark and received more than 2.5 billion page views per month. Jappy.de has been operating as a GmbH since 2007 , based in Hauzenberg in the district of Passau. On June 15, 2011, Jappy celebrated his 10th birthday.

The site is funded by advertising revenue. According to Comscore admetrix April 2011, Jappy was among the top 3 publishers in Germany based on ad impressions.

The new version V4 has been online since autumn 2011 . It was a revision and came up with new features, but with restrictions compared to the previous version. From September 18, 2013 version 4 will be presented after a facelift.

On August 12th, 2015 a new version of Jappy was presented again. With its simplified design elements, this is very much based on the mobile version.

offer

Registration is required to use the network. Members give a nickname when registering . As a rule, a pseudonym is used for this , with which the users move within the platform. Since February 2010 it has been possible to enter the real first and last name in addition to the nickname and to display them in the profile depending on the privacy settings. Since November 2012, only the first name has been requested and, if desired, also displayed.

The members have various options such as tickers, groups, guest books and a mail system. You can design your personal profile with a welcome text, pictures and your own subpages. Each member also has the opportunity to activate a flirt option. In exchange for a virtual currency, called Jappy Credits, other users can be given virtual emoticons and gifts.

In addition to a mobile version of the platform, there is also the so-called “Jappy Messenger”, an application for smartphones and tablets with Android or Apple iOS operating systems.

In March 2009, Stern.de described Jappy as a “visual adventure”, “kitsch universe” and “parallel universe of society” due to the “accumulation of kitschy greeting cards”.

In April 2011, Der Spiegel stated that “every platform has its own profile and its own reputation” and described Jappy as a “rather permissive contact exchange” in comparison with other social platforms.

Users

The platform is accessible to users aged 14 and over. Jappy does not generally perform age verification. The contact filter is preset for all registered users between the ages of 14 and 18 when they log in, i. That is, they can only be contacted by other users between the ages of 14 and 20. These young people can switch off or change this attitude independently.

The members were looked after by around 200 honorary moderators until the beginning of 2017, since then the team has shrunk to a few full-time moderators. The moderator team is divided into users, games, Coms (groups), youth protection and ambassadors in terms of their responsibilities .

Spiegel Online called the Internet community Jappy.de, with 1.9 million members at the time of reporting, a “comparatively small” network compared to the VZ networks , but the users were “very active”.

An evaluation of the Google AdPlanner by the industry magazine Meedia.de in February 2011 showed that Jappy was one of the top ten social networks in Germany and was at the top in terms of length of stay per visit. The Internet market research institute Comscore confirmed the length of stay measured in August 2011. Jappy.de took second place and was ahead of Facebook.

According to a study carried out by the statistics portal Statista in August 2012, Jappy was no longer one of the ten most popular social networks in Germany; In March 2013, Jappy was ranked 16th on social networks in Germany.

Data security

In March 2010, Stiftung Warentest examined the data protection of a total of ten German-speaking social networks with more than 100,000 visitors per day. A security hole was discovered at Jappy through which attackers could gain access to other user accounts with "simple means: a computer and simple, self-developed software". According to the operator, "data security has since changed". Overall, Jappy was in third place in the ranking with the rating “Clear Defects”.

On the evening of November 5, 2013, one or more attackers succeeded in accessing the Jappy database. The user names, email addresses, dates of birth and passwords of users were read out.
