- Klagenfurt / Austria : The German writer Michael Lentz wins the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize 2001 with the text Muttersterben , whose narrator reflects on his mother's death and his own behavior .

- Berlin / Germany : The PDS , the successor party to the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), which has ruled the GDR for over 40 years, officially condemns the construction of the Berlin Wall . Walter Ulbricht (SED) put this on August 3, 1961 when Soviet de facto - Head of State Nikita Khrushchev ( CPSU through).

- Geneva / Switzerland : At a conference, several countries increase the development aid pledged by France for Burundi from US $ 440 million to US $ 830 million.
Saturday 7th July 2001
- Ulm / Germany : The German women's national soccer team becomes European champion for the fifth time at the 8th European Championship with a 1-0 after a golden goal in the final against Sweden . With 92,703 spectators in 15 games, the finals in Germany set a new record for women's European football championships.

- London / United Kingdom : The American defending champion Venus Williams wins against Justine Henin from Belgium the women's singles tournament of the Wimbledon Championships in tennis .
Monday 9th July 2001
- London / United Kingdom : Croatian tennis player Goran Ivanišević , who has been one of the best players on the ATP Tour for over ten years , wins the title for the first time in the final of the men's singles tournament of the Wimbledon Championships after five sets against Australian Patrick Rafter at a Grand Slam tournament.

- Moscow / Russia : At the 112th meeting of the International Olympic Committee , Beijing , the capital of the People's Republic of China , is chosen to host the 2008 Summer Olympics .
Tuesday 17th July 2001
- Genoa / Italy : Three days before the 27th World Economic Summit with the heads of state of the Group of Eight and the President of the European Commission , economic issues are taking a back seat in the media. The focus is on the security precautions and the tenor is: "Genoa is like a fortress."
Friday July 20, 2001
- Genoa / Italy : During the G8 economic summit, parts of the police and demonstrators indulged in rampant brutality on the streets of the city. While a police vehicle is being attacked with wooden beams, fire extinguishers and similar objects, a 20-year-old carabinieri shoots 23-year-old Carlo Giuliani .

With respect to the environmental agreements of Kyoto , leaders acknowledge differences of opinion. The United States is considered to be the greatest critic of a climate policy based on the ideas of the United Nations .
