- Berlin / Germany : The Civil Partnership Act , which the duties and rights of same sex couples in some respects to those of marriage aligns partners, comes into force.
Saturday 4th August 2001
- Moscow / Russia : The North Korean de facto head of state Kim Jong-il meets with the President of Russia Vladimir Putin after a nine-day train journey . In addition to measures for “strategic stability”, there is also talk of a reunification of North and South Korea .
Sunday 5th August 2001
- Afghanistan : The Taliban shut down a Shelter Now agency and arrest 24 employees who they accuse of promoting the conversion of Muslims to Christianity . According to the Shari'a , this attempt can be punished with death .
Monday 6th August 2001
- La Paz / Bolivia : President Hugo Banzer Suárez of the Democratic-Nationalist Action resigns due to his cancer and hands over the official business to his previous deputy Jorge Quiroga Ramírez .
- Washington, DC / United States : Today the President's Daily Brief for US President George W. Bush bears the title " Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US" ( German: "Bin Ladin determined to strike in the United States" ).

- Algiers / Algeria : The 15th World Festival of Youth and Students opens. The event of the World Socialist Federation of Democratic Youth is taking place in an African country for the first time .

- Jerusalem / Israel : A suicide attack by radical Palestinians on a branch of the Sbarro restaurant chain kills 15 and injures 130.
Monday August 13, 2001
- Ohrid / Macedonia : Macedonia and Albania conclude the Ohrid Framework Agreement , which is intended to ensure adequate representation of the Albanian minority in the Macedonian state apparatus.
Tuesday August 14, 2001
- Mexico City / Mexico : The new laws on the rights of indigenous peoples are given constitutional status . Zapatista indigenous groups reject these laws and also renew their criticism of the Puebla-Panamá plan for the construction of further border crossings, roads, mines and dams in Central America .
- Pyongyang / North Korea : The memorial for the reunification of Korea is inaugurated and a reminder of independence, freedom of ideology and peace. In the current political situation, however, Korean reunification is utopian.

- Friedrichshafen / Germany : For the first time in over 60 years, a Zeppelin , the Zeppelin NT model , starts passenger flight operations.
Sunday 19th August 2001
- Budapest / Hungary : The German Michael Schumacher wins in Ferrari F2001 the Hungarian Grand Prix . The title holder from 1994 , 1995 and 2000 is thus unmatched in first place in the 2001 World Drivers Championship .
Friday August 24, 2001
- Terceira / Portugal : On the way from Toronto to Lisbon , Air Transat flight 236 ran out of fuel over the Atlantic . After the previously longest gliding a jet aircraft , the pilots were the Airbus A330 with 293 passengers and 13 crew members on board on the Azores island of Terceira make an emergency landing .

- Oslo / Norway : Prince Haakon , only son of the King of Norway Harald V , and Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby celebrate their wedding .
Monday August 27, 2001
- Macedonia : The "Essential Harvest" (Operation German Required harvest ) of the military alliance NATO begins to collect weapons.
Wednesday August 29, 2001
- Indic : The ConRo ship Tampa, cruising off Christmas Island, is in distress . Earlier in the week that saved Norwegian ship 433 mostly Afghan boat people near Indonesia . A group among the rescued forced the captain to change course in the direction of the Australian outer areas. The Australian authorities have since refused the Tampa access to their territorial waters. When the captain finally enters the waters, 45 Australian soldiers take control on board.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The President of the European Central Bank Wim Duisenberg , the euro - banknotes before. As of January 1, 2002, they will be used as payment in twelve European countries.
