- Erfurt , Kiel , Mainz , Munich / Germany : With the introduction of four military area commands of changing the course of the reorganization of the Bundeswehr , the defense of the territorial protection by a field army to a bundled defense by Army , Air Force and Navy .
- Dhaka / Bangladesh : The parliamentary election in Bangladesh is won by the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

- Zurich / Switzerland : The airline Swissair is discontinuing its entire flight operations for the foreseeable future due to liquidity problems.
Thursday October 4th 2001
- Brussels / Belgium : The North Atlantic Council of the NATO military alliance follows the request of the United States and, because of the terrorist attacks on September 11, declares the alliance case under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty . All alliance members are obliged to stand by the country that has been militarily attacked on their own territory. The alliance parties are required to use armed force if this serves the "security of the North Atlantic area", according to the wording in the treaty. It is the first case of an alliance in NATO history.

- Cologne / Germany : In a judgment on websites , the regional court decides that the owner is liable in any case for the web content that third parties publish on his website. In the specific case, a member of an online community published defamatory photo montages by the tennis player Steffi Graf .

- Kailua-Kona / United States : Natascha Badmann from Switzerland wins the women's competition at the Ironman Hawaii triathlon for the second time in a row and for the third time in her career . In the men's race, the American Tim DeBoom completed the fastest route.
Sunday 7th October 2001
- Chicago / United States : The world record set a week ago in the women's marathon is broken again at the Chicago Marathon when the Kenyan Catherine Ndereba reaches the finish line after 2 hours 18 minutes 47 seconds and is almost a minute faster than the previous world record holder Naoko Takahashi .
- Washington, DC / United States : US President George W. Bush describes the entry of Western troops into Afghanistan and thus the start of Operation Enduring Freedom as a reaction to the 9/11 attacks : "Now the Taliban will pay the price."

- Stockholm / Sweden : The Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine will be awarded this year to the American Leland H. Hartwell and the British Tim Hunt and Paul Nurse for their research into cellular circulation .
Tuesday October 9, 2001
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Nobel Prize in Physics will be awarded this year to the Americans Eric Allin Cornell and Carl Edwin Wieman and the German Wolfgang Ketterle for their services to the Bose-Einstein condensate .
Wednesday October 10, 2001
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Americans William S. Knowles and Barry Sharpless as well as the Japanese Ryōji Noyori will receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year . The foundation honors her work in the study of catalysis using water and oxygen . The Americans George A. Akerlof , A. Michael Spence and Joseph E. Stiglitz will receive the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics “for their analysis of markets with asymmetrical information” this year .

- Berlin / Germany : King Abdullah II of Jordan visits the Federal Republic. The German government regards it as a stability factor in the Middle East .
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Briton V. S. Naipaul , born in Trinidad and Tobago in 1932 , received the Nobel Prize for Literature this year . One of his most famous works is The Mystical Masseur .

- Oslo / Norway : The intergovernmental organization United Nations and its Secretary General Kofi Annan will each receive half of this year's Nobel Peace Prize . The committee wants to recognize her for her role as mediator in international conflicts.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The author of the moral-philosophical text collection The Philosophical Discourse of Modernism Jürgen Habermas from Germany receives the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade .

- Seoul / South Korea : In a park in the South Korean capital, Japan's Prime Minister Jun'ichirō asked Koizumi with a wreath-laying wreath to apologize for the atrocities perpetrated by his people during the Japanese rule over Korea between 1910 and 1945.

- Shanghai / China : At the thirteenth summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Community APEC, a declaration on counter-terrorism is issued for the first time . The long-term goal of the members has been a free trade area since 1989 , but elementary steps towards this are not taken at the summit.

- The Hague / Netherlands : In the appeal proceedings for the judgment of January 14, 2000, the International Criminal Court for the Former Yugoslavia acquitted three of the five convicted of the Ahmići massacre and reduced the sentences of the other two to 12 and 18 years respectively.

Bush endorses the law to unite and strengthen America by providing suitable instruments to stop and block terrorism ( USA Patriot Act for short ) with his signature.
