Tuesday January 1, 2002
- Bern / Switzerland : Kaspar Villiger ( FDP ) becomes the new Federal President . At the same time, a bilateral agreement with the European Union comes into force.
- Bucharest / Romania , Sofia / Bulgaria : The European Union lifts the visa requirement for citizens with Bulgarian or Romanian citizenship.
- Frankfurt / Germany : The euro is introduced as a common currency in 12 countries of the European Union . As of today, euro cash is legal tender. You can still pay for two months in the old currency, but change is always given in euros. D-Mark coins and notes can also be exchanged for an unlimited period at bank counters.
- Islamabad / Pakistan : Agreement on customs relief in the textile sector with the European Union .
- Kabul / Afghanistan : Hamid Karzai takes over the transitional government.
- Madrid / Spain : Spain takes over the presidency of the Council of the European Union from Belgium . The office of Head of Government of the EC will be taken over by José María Aznar .
- Munich / Germany : The Bavarian Administrative Court approves the lawsuit of a Pfaffenhofen elementary school teacher: He had demanded that the crucifixes in his classroom be removed for reasons of conscience.
- New York / United States : Bulgaria , Guinea , Cameroon , Mexico and Syria are new non-permanent members in the Security Council of the United Nations .
Wednesday January 2, 2002
- Buenos Aires / Argentina : In the vote in the National Congress on the new President of Argentina, 262 members vote for the Peronist Eduardo Duhalde , 39 vote against him or abstain.
- Lusaka / Zambia : Levy Mwanawasa is sworn in as the new President. He narrowly won the presidential election on December 27, 2001.
- Wilhelmshaven / Germany : Six ships of the German Navy , including the frigates Bavaria , Cologne and Emden, set off for Operation Enduring Freedom in the Horn of Africa .
Friday 4th January 2002
- Kabul / Afghanistan : Interior Minister Junis Kanumi concludes an agreement with British commander John McColl on the stationing of the approximately 5,000-strong ISAF force . Initially, their mandate only applies to the capital.
Saturday 5th January 2002
- Tampa / United States : A 15-year-old man flies into the Bank of America skyscraper in a stolen small plane . According to a note left, he is acting out of sympathy with Osama bin Laden .
Sunday January 6, 2002
- Bischofshofen / Austria : In the fourth ski jumping competition of the Four Hills Tournament , the German Sven Hannawald wins ahead of Matti Hautamäki from Finland and Martin Höllwarth from Austria. Hannawald wins the overall ranking ahead of Hautamaeki and Höllwarth and is the first athlete to take first place in all competitions of a single Four Hills Tournament.
Tuesday January 8, 2002
- Tallinn / Estonia : As previously announced, Prime Minister Mart Laar is stepping down from his post. The reason is a conflict in his three-party coalition.
Wednesday January 9, 2002
- Rafah / Palestinian Territories : Six Israeli soldiers are killed in an attack by militant Palestinians. In retaliation, the Israeli Air Force destroyed the runway at the Gaza Strip International Airport near Rafah, and technical facilities and buildings were also hit.
Friday January 11, 2002
- Buenos Aires / Argentina : The country ends the convertibility of its currency peso to the US dollar . The International Monetary Fund declared Argentina not creditworthy on the same day and did not provide the country with any fresh money until further notice.
- Guantanamo Bay / Cuba : The first 20 Taliban and Al-Qaida fighters arrive in the US Army's extraterritorial camp. They are denied both the status of war prisoners and civil prisoners. As “irregular fighters”, they are exposed to conditions of detention that arouse sharp protests from human rights organizations. The number of those held in the camp rose to 300 over the next two months.
- Magdeburg / Germany : In a closed meeting of the CDU announced Angela Merkel to a possible positioning as a leading candidate of the opposition parties in the federal election in autumn waived. It paves the way for the top candidacy of the CSU party leader Edmund Stoiber , although surveys of the Union parties predict a better election result with Merkel as candidate for chancellor. Merkel informed Stoiber about her withdrawal over breakfast in his house in Wolfratshausen .

- Islamabad / Pakistan : In a keynote address, President Pervez Musharraf condemns terror, intolerance and extremist violence.
Wednesday January 16, 2002
- Sydney / Australia : After a good three weeks, the fire brigade finally succeeds in putting out the fires in the region. As a result, 25 mostly young people are arrested on suspicion of arson.
Thursday 17th January 2002
- Banjul / Gambia : The parliamentary elections are taking place.
- Berlin / Germany : The Berlin House of Representatives elects a senate from the SPD and PDS . Klaus Wowereit becomes the new governing mayor.
- Hadera / Israel : At a party, a militant Palestinian kills six people and injures 27 others. In retaliation, the Israeli Air Force attacks targets in Tulkarem . Two days later, the building of the Voice of Palestine was also destroyed.
- Goma / DR Congo : Around 350,000 people are fleeing the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in the east of the republic. A lava flow up to 300 m wide pours through the city. At least 45 people are killed.
- Baltic Sea Region : The Helsinki Convention adopted in 1992 comes into force and replaces the Helsinki Convention of 1974 .
Saturday 19th January 2002
- Bamako / Mali : Host Mali will play a tie against Liberia in the opening game of the 23rd African Cup of Nations .
- Bürgenstock / Switzerland : Representatives of the Sudanese government and the Sudanese People's Liberation Army ( SPLM) decide on a ceasefire that will end the civil war in the south of the country after 19 years.

- Beverly Hills / United States : At the Golden Globe Awards , the film A Beautiful Mind received four awards: Best Drama, Best Screenplay, Russell Crowe for Best Actor and Jennifer Connelly for Best Supporting Actress.
- Bonn / Germany : The German Federal Cartel Office prohibited the E.ON AG the acquisition of a majority stake in Gelsenberg , preventing the acquisition of long-distance and natural gas trading company Ruhrgas by E.ON.

- South Africa : Federal President Johannes Rau arrives for an official state visit.

- Calcutta / India : Muslim extremists shoot four security guards at a US information center.
- Sofia / Bulgaria : Georgi Parvanov becomes President of the Government.

- Melbourne / Australia : The American Jennifer Capriati can successfully defend her title at the Australian Open in tennis . She defeated the Swiss Martina Hingis in the final .

- Lagos / Nigeria : More than 1,000 people are killed in a fire in an ammunition store.
- Melbourne / Australia : Thomas Johansson from Sweden wins the Grand Slam tournament of the Australian Open .
- Tashkent / Uzbekistan : The referendum to extend the term of office of the head of state for seven years ends with a large majority in favor of this plan. Critics call the plebiscite a pseudo-democratic way to enable President Islom Karimov to stay in power longer. Karimov explains that the referendum will strengthen democracy .
- Tegucigalpa / Honduras : Ricardo Maduro becomes the new head of state and government.

- Tulcán / Colombia : A Boeing 727 military plane crashes into the mountains about 30 km from its destination. All 92 people on board die.

- Washington, DC / United States : US President George W. Bush stops in front of the Congress , a State of the Nation . In this he names Iraq , Iran and North Korea as the " axis of evil ".
Wednesday January 30, 2002
- Berlin / Germany : The German Bundestag decides to only allow the import of embryonic stem cells if they are already existing cell cultures . This is to prevent the development of new lines from being initiated from Germany.
Thursday January 31, 2002
- New York / United States , Porto Alegre / Brazil : The World Economic Forum is meeting from today in the New York Hotel Waldorf Astoria , there are protests in front of the building despite the ban on demonstrations. At the same time, a counter-event to the World Economic Forum will take place in Porto Alegre with the World Social Forum .
