- Palestinian Territories : The Israel Defense Forces ended Operation Shield , during which they occupied various cities in the Palestinian Territories in order to destroy the infrastructure of the terrorist organizations Al-Aqsa Brigades , Fatah , Hamas and Islamic Jihad, as well as the security service of the Palestinian Authority . The withdrawal is given after May 1 for the office of President of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat entrenched fighters extradition to US - and British forces was negotiated.

- Dortmund / Germany : With a 2-1 win on the last match day against Werder Bremen , Borussia Dortmund becomes German football champions 2002 .
Sunday May 5, 2002
- Paris / France : Incumbent Jacques Chirac wins the second round of the French presidential election with 82.2% clearly against right-wing extremist Jean-Marie Le Pen with 17.8%. Its good performance in the first round had sparked protests across the country. Jacques Chirac appoints Jean-Pierre Raffarin as Prime Minister and successor to Lionel Jospin , who stepped down from office after his poor performance in the presidential election.
- Sandusky / United States : In the amusement park Cedar Point is the Wicked Twister , the tallest and fastest roller coaster type Twisted Impulse Coaster opened.
Monday May 6, 2002
- Hilversum / Netherlands : The controversial politician Pim Fortuyn is murdered in the street by the environmentalist Volkert van der Graaf with five shots. The Dutch public is shocked - this is the first political murder in the Netherlands since 1672 . Van der Graaf is later sentenced to 18 years in prison.

- Paris / France : Nicolas Sarkozy becomes French interior minister.
- Rishon leTzion / Israel : A Palestinian suicide bomber kills 15 people in an attack.

- Basel / Switzerland : FC Basel is officially the 2002 Swiss football champions .
- Rotterdam / Netherlands : Feyenoord Rotterdam wins the football - UEFA Cup after a 3-2 win in the final against Borussia Dortmund .
Thursday May 9, 2002
- Innsbruck / Austria : The defending champions FC Tirol Innsbruck are officially Austrian football champions 2002 . It is the third championship in a row.
Friday May 10, 2002
- Paktika / Afghanistan : In “Operation Snipe”, British pioneer troops destroy a cave complex in the Afghan- Pakistani border area between the Paktika and Paktia regions . According to the British Army , it was the largest detonation caused by the armed forces since World War II .

- Berlin / Germany : In the final of the DFB Cup in the Olympiastadion Berlin , defending champions FC Schalke 04 celebrated a 4-2 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen .
- Gothenburg / Sweden : Slovakia becomes ice hockey world champion with a 4-3 win against Russia .

- Basel / Switzerland : FC Basel wins the final of the Swiss Cup in football in St. Jakob-Park with 2-1 against Grasshopper Club Zurich .
- Graz / Austria : In the Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium , the Grazer AK wins the ÖFB Cup against SK Sturm Graz - final with 3: 2.
Wednesday May 15, 2002
- Böblingen / Germany : In the collective bargaining dispute between IG Metall Baden-Württemberg and the employers' association Südwestmetall, a pilot deal is achieved after massive strikes in 129 companies with around 173,000 participants in the metal and electrical industry in Baden-Württemberg. It provides for income increases of four percent from June 2002 and from June 2003 by a further 3.1%.
- The Hague / Netherlands : In the elections to the lower house which is Christian-Democratisch Appèl of Jan Peter Balkenende strongest force and achieved 43 of the 150 seats. The Lijst Pim Fortuyn reached a record high with 26 seats after its party founder Pim Fortuyn was murdered on May 6th.
- Glasgow / United Kingdom : Real Madrid beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League final . The game takes place in front of around 51,000 spectators in Hampden Park .

- Netanya / Israel : A Palestinian suicide bomber, who disguised himself as an Israeli soldier, kills two people with him.

- Dili / East Timor : After three years of administration under the United Nations , East Timor (Timor-Leste) is given independence in a ceremony at midnight .
Tuesday May 28, 2002
- Pomezia / Italy : In the Pratica di Mare district , the NATO military alliance is formally establishing partnership relations with Russia . The new partner is the largest successor state to the Soviet Union , to whose military deterrence NATO was once founded.
- Washington, DC / United States : The space agency NASA announces that its 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft detected large ice deposits on Mars .

- Seoul / South Korea : The Swiss Sepp Blatter , President of the World Football Association FIFA , will be re-elected for a second term in the first ballot.

- New York / United States : The rescue of the people who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the World Trade Center is completed with a ceremony . About 3,000 people were killed in the attack on New York's two tallest buildings.
Friday May 31, 2002
- Seoul / South Korea : In the opening game of the World Cup , Senegal surprisingly defeated the reigning world champions France 1-0.
