- Knittelfeld / Austria : At the Knittelfelder FPÖ Assembly , an extraordinary party congress of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), a friend of the former party chairman Jörg Haider tore up the printed compromise proposal on the political orientation of the FPÖ between Haider and the current party chairman Susanne Riess- Passer . Because of the internal party dispute over the direction, the ÖVP -FPÖ government coalition is threatened with breaking up at the federal level.
- New York / United States : The American Serena Williams wins by beating her sister Venus Williams competition in the women's singles of the 122nd edition of the tennis tournament US Open .
- Venice / Italy : The film The Merciless Sisters by British director Peter Mullan is awarded the Leone d'Oro at the 59th Venice International Film Festival .
Sunday 8th September 2002
- New York / United States : The American Pete Sampras wins the final in the men's singles of the US Open against his compatriot Andre Agassi in four sets. It is Sampras' fifth title in this tennis tournament .

- New York / United States : The General Assembly of the United Nations approves the admission of Switzerland to the organization. Seven months ago, the Swiss electorate voted in a referendum on membership in favor of joining.
Thursday September 12, 2002
- New York / United States : US President George W. Bush informs the General Assembly of the United Nations that the United States will single-handedly attack Iraq militarily if international politics disagree with his country's positions.
Sunday 15th September 2002
- Skopje / Macedonia : The opposition alliance “Together for Macedonia” wins 60 out of 120 seats in the parliamentary elections, the majority of which go to the Social Democratic League of Macedonia .
- Stockholm / Sweden : In the election to the Reichstag , the ruling Social Democratic Workers' Party (SAP) achieved the best result of all parties with almost 40% of the vote. It is followed by the Moderate Collection Party with 15.3%. The continuation of the SAP minority government, so far supported by two smaller parties of the political left , appears possible.

- Pattaya / Thailand : During the negotiations to end the civil war in Sri Lanka on a Thai naval base, the paramilitary organization Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam officially announces for the first time that it will no longer fight for the independence of a Tamil state called Tamil Eelam .
- Tübingen / Germany : According to the newspaper Schwäbisches Tagblatt, the Federal Minister of Justice Herta Däubler-Gmelin ( SPD ) compares the methods of the President of the United States George W. Bush with those of the founder of National Socialism, Adolf Hitler , by analyzing that Bush with his War politics, just as Hitler once did, distract from domestic political problems. - Berlin / Germany : The voters allow the red-green government coalition under Chancellor Gerhard Schröder ( SPD ) to continue their work in the federal elections in 2002 . The SPD is so close to the CDU / CSU that their chancellor candidate Edmund Stoiber (CSU) feels like the winner of the election in front of the television cameras until late at night.
- Los Angeles / United States : At the 54th Emmy TV award ceremony , u. a. Jennifer Aniston excellent. She has been on the sitcom Friends for eight years .
- Schwerin / Germany : In the state elections in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania , the three-party parliament of 1998 is confirmed, the SPD becomes the strongest force again with significant gains and over 40% of the votes, the CDU , which can easily be gained, remains in the opposition and the PDS despite losses according to statements by Prime Minister Harald Ringstorff (SPD) on the evening of the election, he still has government responsibility.

- New York / United States : As the 191st member of the United Nations , the eastern half of the island of Timor , which has been under Indonesian occupation for many years , is known as the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste . This means that the international recognition of East Timor as a state is largely complete.
