The bourgeois parties narrowly won the election, so that the previous Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda was able to form his second government .
Electoral system
The National Council was elected using proportional representation. There was a threshold clause of 5% for individual parties, 7% for a coalition of two to three parties and 10% for four or more parties. The legislative period was four years.
Participating parties and candidates
26 political parties and movements with a total of 2,619 candidates ran for the election.
choice
The turnout of 70.06% was significantly lower than in the previous election year.
A total of around 4.15 million eligible voters were invited to cast their votes on September 20 and 21, 2002.
Election result
Although the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) won the election with almost 20%, as in the previous ten years, this was the lowest result in the decade and the party was unable to form the new government. The right-wing / neoliberal parties Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Party of the Hungarian Coalition (SMK-MKP), Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Alliance of the New Citizen (ANO) together achieved a slim majority of 78 seats. From the political left, the party moved Smer (dt. Direction ) of Robert Fico into the National Council as the third largest party, while the Communist Party of Slovakia (KSS) received a representation with 6.32% for the first time in the independent Slovakia.
The internal conflict within the Slovak National Party, which split before the election, resulted in poor results for both parties. Neither the True Slovak National Party (PSNS) nor the Slovak National Party (SNS) could join the National Council.
The result was positively received by Western governments as well as by NATO and the EU (Slovakia was in the negotiation phase at the time), as the possibility of a government with Mečiar's HZDS party, which put Slovakia into isolation in the 1990s, was raised Years brought, had reduced. Two years after the election, Slovakia joined both organizations.
