prehistory

The early election became necessary when the second government of Vladimír Mečiar failed in a vote of no confidence in the National Council (so-called parliamentary coup) and on March 15, 1994, President Michal Kováč instructed the former Foreign Minister of Mečiar's government, Jozef Moravčík, to form a temporary government .

Electoral system

The National Council was elected using proportional representation. There was a threshold clause of 5% for individual parties, 7% for a coalition of two to three parties and 10% for four or more parties. The legislative period was 4 years.

Participating parties and candidates

18 political parties and movements with a total of 1,929 candidates ran for election.

choice

The turnout was 75.65% and thus continued the downward trend of the previous election years.

A total of around 3.9 million eligible voters were called on September 30 and October 1, 1994 to cast their votes.
