Presidential election in Slovakia 2019
The 2019 presidential election in Slovakia was the fifth direct presidential election in Slovakia. The previous incumbent Andrej Kiska was not up for re-election, so a new president was elected.
In the first ballot on March 16, 2019, 15 candidates were on the ballot. The runoff election was held on March 30, 2019 between the two best placed in the first round, Zuzana Čaputová and Maroš Šefčovič . Zuzana Čaputová won the runoff election (with a turnout of just under 42%) with 58.41% of the vote, and she will be the first (female) President of Slovakia from June 15, 2019.

By the registration deadline of January 31, 2019, 15 candidates who had either submitted support from at least 15 MPs or collected at least 15,000 support signatures had registered. Below is an overview of all candidates:

Two candidates, József Menyhárt and Róbert Mistrík , gave up their candidacy before the first ballot, but were still on the ballot for election. Three candidates (Radovan Znášik, Ján Molnár and Martin Konečný) were not allowed to stand for election by the parliamentary speaker Andrej Danko .
In addition to the incumbent Andrej Kiska, other potential candidates rejected the candidacy. In addition to then Prime Minister Robert Fico , who declared in December 2017 that he would not stand for election, this was also announced by MEP Pál Csáky , former Prime Minister Iveta Radičová , OĽaNO MP Veronika Remišová and the chairman of the Slovak National Party Andrej Danko.
The strongest ruling party, Smer - sociálna demokracia, wanted to register Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák as a candidate, but he rejected the candidacy several times.
Election result
First ballot on March 16, 2019
In the first round, Zuzana Čaputová (40.57%) won with a clear gap of almost 22 percentage points ahead of Maroš Šefčovič (18.66%) with a turnout of 48.74%. You thus went to the runoff election on March 30; Štefan Harabin (14.34%) and Marian Kotleba (10.39%) found greater support.
According to the political structure , Čaputová won in all eight landscape associations ( kraj ) , each ahead of Šefčovič and Harabin, with the exception of Banskobystrický kraj , where Kotleba came third.
Voter turnout was highest in Bratislavský kraj (58.88%), and lowest in Košický kraj (42.00%).
Second ballot on March 30, 2019
The runoff between the top two finishers in the first round, Zuzana Čaputová and Maroš Šefčovič, took place on March 30, 2019. The turnout was only 41.79%.
In the runoff election, Zuzana Čaputová (58.41%) won with an advantage of almost 18 percentage points over Maroš Šefčovič (41.59%) and was elected President of Slovakia. She won in seven out of eight regional associations ( kraj ), only in Prešovský kraj could Šefčovič get more votes.
As in the first ballot, voter turnout was highest in Bratislavský kraj (54.66%) and lowest in Košický kraj (35.53%). Because voting is only possible domestically, Slovaks who live in areas near the border in Austria and Hungary or in the Czech Republic drove across the border to vote.
