The 2019 presidential election in Romania took place in November 2019. The first round took place on November 10, 2019. The incumbent, President Klaus Iohannis , ran for re-election. On November 24, 2019, a runoff election took place between him and Viorica Dăncilă , which Iohannis clearly won.

Klaus Iohannis won against Victor Ponta in 2014 and was sworn in for his first term on December 21, 2014. According to Article 83 of the Romanian Constitution , the Romanian President's term of office is five years. It begins on the date on which the oath was taken; a maximum of two terms of office are possible. In June 2018, incumbent President Iohannis publicly announced his intention to run for a second term as President.

PNL

Klaus Iohannis

Iohannis' candidacy in the 2014 presidential election was supported by the National Liberal Party (PNL), of which he was chairman at the time. After taking office as president, Iohannis suspended his PNL membership as the constitution does not allow the president to be a formal member of any political party during his tenure. Ludovic Orban , the president of the PNL, reiterated the party's support for Iohannis after the election. On March 11, 2018, the PNL officially confirmed Klaus Iohannis' candidacy for a new term as president. He was in the election campaign for a "normal Romania", with an independent judiciary and against corruption.

Psd

Viorica Dăncilă

Liviu Dragnea , President of the Chamber of Deputies since 2016, and Gabriela Firea , Mayor of Bucharest since 2016, were considered potential candidates for the PSD. Both denied this media speculation. Firea said she wanted to end her term as mayor, while Liviu Dragnea rejected the idea, saying he and the PSD were focused on the government program and parliamentary agenda since Dragnea was President of the Chamber. After Dragnea was sentenced to prison on May 27, 2019 on corruption charges, he was no longer eligible for the presidential election. Viorica Dăncilă then ran for the PSD , until she was elected Prime Minister in October 2019. In the election campaign, she mainly courted low-income voters.

USR

Dan Barna

Nicuşor Dan , former president of Uniunea Salvați România , the country's third largest political party, said the party should put up its own candidate for the elections. Dan Barna , the new president of the USR, said in an interview with the Adevărul newspaper that the USR would have a presidential candidate who would be decided by a vote within the party. Dacian Cioloș is "an option" because he is a very well known person. Eventually Dan Barna ran for election. The main theme of his election campaign was the fight against corruption.
