The 1996 presidential elections in Romania took place on November 3rd and 17th, 1996. In the first round, Ion Iliescu from the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PDSR, now PSD ) and Emil Constantinescu , the candidate for the “Democratic Convention” - a larger bourgeois party alliance - received the most votes. In the runoff election, Constantinescu was able to prevail against Iliescu.
