The 1990 presidential elections in Romania took place on May 20, 1990. Together with the parliamentary elections taking place at the same time , they were the first democratic elections in Romania after the revolution . Ion Iliescu from the "National Rescue Front" (FSN) achieved a clear absolute majority of the votes in the first ballot so that a runoff was not necessary.
