Jean de Murol

Jean de Murol (around 1340 ; † February 10, 1399 in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon ) was bishop of Geneva from 1378 to 1385 , pseudocardinal from 1385 and bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux from 1385 to 1388 .

Life

Jean came from a noble family from the Auvergne. His parents were Jean, Herr von Murol and Adélaïde de Rochebriand. He grew up at the papal court in Avignon in the house of Cardinal Guy de Boulogne . There he met his nephew Robert of Geneva, who later became Pope Clement VII . In 1358 he received from Innocent VI. a canon and a benefice in Geneva, he was canon in Rouen and Paris and archdeacon in Cambrai . He was Vicar General Roberts of Geneva in the dioceses of Thérouanne(1361-1368) and Cambrai (1368-1371). After Robert's appointment as cardinal, he became his secretary. After Guillaume de Marcossey's death, the Geneva Chapter elected Robert Chambrier as his successor. Gregory XI. however, appointed Jean de Murol Bishop of Geneva and appointed him to the Apostolic Chamber . He was entrusted with numerous diplomatic missions in France. His presence in Geneva is only in 1381 when he passed a synodal constitution and documented it in 1384.

Clement VII appointed him cardinal priest of San Vitale and bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux in 1385 .

He died in Avignon in 1399 and was buried in the Cathedral of Clermont-Ferrand .
