Emil Constantinescu (born November 19, 1939 in Tighina , today Moldova ) is a Romanian politician and was the country's president from 1996 to 2000 .

From 1956 to 1960 he attended the Faculty of Law at the University of Bucharest and graduated as a lawyer. From 1961 to 1966 he then attended the second degree at the Geological-Geographical Faculty and obtained a degree in geology.

In February 1996 the Democratic Convention's electoral alliance won local elections in most of the country's cities, including the capital Bucharest . In the following parliamentary election on November 3, 1996, his party, the PNȚ-CD (part of the Democratic Convention “CDR”) emerged as the winner. On November 17, 1996, he won a direct election and became president. He held the office until December 2000. He declined to run for a second mandate and was replaced by his predecessor Ion Iliescu .

He is a board member of the World Justice Project .

Emil Constantinescu is married to Nadia Ileana and has two children.
