The 2014 presidential election in Slovakia took place on March 15, 2014 (first round) and on March 29, 2014 (runoff). The previous incumbent Ivan Gašparovič could not run again, as the Slovak constitution states that the President cannot hold more than two consecutive terms. Andrej Kiska won the election and took office on June 15, 2014.

By the 23:59 registration deadline on January 9, 2014, 15 candidates had registered who either had political support or had collected at least 15,000 signatures. In the first round there were 14 candidates to choose from.

Candidates

The ruling Smer-SD party put Prime Minister Robert Fico for election. If successful, a new prime minister would be needed; this fact gave rise to speculation about a possible future prime minister. According to the polls, Fico was way ahead of other candidates.

The opposition candidates were fragmented: the KDH together with Most – Híd agreed on the former parliamentary president Pavol Hrušovský ; later the SDKÚ-DS also joined. Former Prime Minister Iveta Radičová had previously ruled out her candidacy. Peter Osuský from SaS gave up his candidacy in January 2014; instead, the party supported the bourgeois candidate Radoslav Procházka . Candidates from the extra-parliamentary parties were Gyula Bárdos ( SMK-MKP ), Ján Jurišta ( KSS ), Stanislav Martinčko ( KOS ) and Jozef Šimko ( SMS ).

There were also a number of non-party candidates. In addition to Radoslav Procházka, the former managing director and philanthropist Andrej Kiska was seen as a potential opponent of Fico in the second round. Other candidates were Jozef Behýl , Ján Čarnogurský , Viliam Fischer , Milan Kňažko and Milan Melník . Helena Mezenská was the only woman to run for election.
