Presidential election in Slovakia 2009
The 2009 presidential election in Slovakia took place on March 21 (first round) and April 4 (second round) 2009. It was the third direct election of the president in Slovakia . The incumbent President Ivan Gašparovič defeated the opposition candidate Iveta Radičová in both rounds and will remain in office until 2014.
Candidates
Seven candidates ran for election. The two most promising candidates for the office were the incumbent Ivan Gašparovič (supported by the governing parties Smer and SNS ) and the SDKÚ-DS MP Iveta Radičová (supported by the opposition parties SDKÚ-DS , SMK-MKP and KDH ). Other candidates were Milan Melník (supported by the ruling HZDS ) and the representatives of extra-parliamentary parties Zuzana Martináková ( Free Forum ), František Mikloško ( KDS ) and Milan Sidor ( KSS ). Dagmar Bollová's former KSS deputy ran as an independent.
Election result
First ballot
In the first round of elections, only Gašparovič and Radičová were able to achieve greater support. The other candidates failed. Radičová was able to secure the large cities of Bratislava and Košice as well as the area of Banská Bystrica and parts of southern Slovakia. In the rest of Slovakia, Gašparovič dominated.
Second ballot
In the second round of the election, Radičová was defeated by incumbent President Gašparovič by around 10%. Radičová lost the Banská Bystrica area. However, it retained the approval of southern Slovakia with the exception of the Lučenec constituency. Gašparovič won in the rest of the country. Gašparovič will remain in the presidency until 2014.
