- London / United Kingdom : An excavation on the site of the Roman Temple precinct in Southwark found the inscription of Tiberinius Celerianus from the 2nd century . It turns out to be the oldest written document that mentions the city of London, namely in the form "Londiniensium" ( German " the Londoner " ).
Friday 4th October 2002
- Munich / Germany : In the early morning, an oven sets the entire "Glöckle-Wirt" marquee on fire at the Munich Oktoberfest , which is completely destroyed. People are not harmed.
Saturday 5th October 2002
- Alexandria / United States : The American citizen John Walker Lindh , who as armed fighters in the service of religious - fundamentalist Taliban in Afghanistan presented, is sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.
- Riga / Latvia : In the general election , which was founded in 2001 reaches conservative party New Era , the best party result, however, is far below the absolute majority. The Latvian Way party , whose ranks have included four heads of government since 1993 , suffers the greatest losses .

- Brasília / Brazil : The presidential election in Brazil takes place, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is the favorite.
- Vatican City : The Opus Dei founder Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer is canonized by Pope John Paul II .

- Stockholm / Sweden : The Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine this year goes to the British John E. Sulston , his compatriot Sydney Brenner , who was born in South Africa in 1927, and the American H. Robert Horvitz "for their discoveries about the genetic control of organ development and programmed cell death " receive.

- Pasadena / United States : The California Institute of Technology announces the discovery of the trans-Neptunian object Quaoar . It is half the size of Pluto , which is considered a planet .
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Nobel Prize for Physics will be awarded this year to the American Raymond Davis junior , the Italian- American Riccardo Giacconi and the Japanese Masatoshi Koshiba for their work in the field of astrophysics .
Wednesday October 9, 2002
- Gorleben / Germany : On the night of October 9th to 10th, the most extensive Castor transport to date in Germany rolls over the rails. The action is largely trouble-free.
- Stockholm / Sweden : The Swiss Kurt Wüthrich , the American John B. Fenn and the Japanese Kōichi Tanaka will receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year . The foundation honors her work in research into macromolecular substances . The American Vernon L. Smith and his compatriot Daniel Kahneman , who was born in Israel in 1934, will receive the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for economics this year for their psychological approach to explaining market developments .

- Oslo / Norway : The 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, Jimmy Carter , will receive this year's Nobel Peace Prize . The committee wants to recognize him for his reconciliation efforts in the Arab-Israeli wars .
- Vantaa / Finland : Seven people die in a bomb attack on a department store .

- Kuta / Indonesia : In a terrorist attack of the radical - Islamist organization Jemaah Islamiyah in a tourist area in Kuta on the island of Bali 202 people are killed and at least 200 others injured. Most of the victims are Australians.
- Vienna / Austria : At the 3rd award of the Nestroy Theater Prize , Ulli Maier is recognized as the best actress and Sven-Eric Bechtolf as the best actor.

- Chicago / United States : The British Paula Radcliffe sets a new world record in the women's marathon . In the Chicago Marathon , she completed the 42.195 km in 2 hours 17 minutes 18 seconds, undercutting Catherine Ndereba's record from 2001 by 29 seconds.
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe receives the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade .

- Kailua-Kona / United States : Natascha Badmann from Switzerland wins the women's competition in the Ironman Hawaii triathlon for the third time in a row and for the fourth time in her career . In the men's category, American Tim DeBoom wins for the second time in a row .

- Düsseldorf / Germany : Wolfgang Clement ( SPD ) resigns as Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia after four years . The state parliament will presumably elect its successor next month. The most promising candidate for the office of Prime Minister is currently Clement's party colleague Peer Steinbrück .

- Berlin / Germany : The members of the Bundestag elect Gerhard Schröder ( SPD ) for the second time as Federal Chancellor with 305 out of 603 possible votes . The vote for Schröder is one voice among the number of the government parties SPD and Alliance 90 / The Greens associated elected .
- Paris / France : A court rejects the lawsuit brought by the French League for Human Rights and other organizations against Michel Houellebecq , in which the best-selling writer is accused of “inciting racial hatred and religious violence”. This defamed Islam in the literary magazine Lire .

- Moscow / Russia : 40 to 50 armed Islamist rebels, who belong to the separatist movement of Chechnya , bring 850 people under their control in the Dubrovka Theater .

- Darmstadt / Germany : The German Academy for Language and Poetry awards the Georg Büchner Prize to the German Wolfgang Hilbig .

- Los Cabos / Mexico : At the 14th Summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Community APEC, the participants pass a security agreement for the APEC region. The long-term goal of the members has been a free trade area since 1989 .
- Oberwiesenthal / Germany : The storm Jeanett sweeps across Germany and claims eleven lives. The damage to property caused by the hurricane, whose top speed is 183 km / h and is measured on the Fichtelberg , amounts to at least 600 million euros according to initial estimates .
