tourism

Kuta is known for its kilometer-long, wide sandy beach, which is why the city developed into a center of western package tourism . The sandy beach of Kutas is good for surfing, but only limited for swimming due to the strong surf . The cityscape is mainly characterized by hotels, tourist-style shops and discos. As a result, Kuta has “westernized” itself over the past few years, especially in the area around the main shopping street, Jalan Legian . Most of the tourists come from Australia, Indonesia, Germany, Japan, China, the Netherlands, India and Malaysia. Bali's Denpasar Ngurah Rai International Airport is located immediately south of Kuta.

Explosives attacks

On October 12, 2002, Kuta was the target of a terrorist attack by Islamic extremists . Two discos were completely destroyed by the detonation of a car bomb and a total of 202 people, mostly Australians, were killed. Since then, a large memorial with the names of the victims has stood on Jalan Legian. There is a parking lot opposite: one of the two discos destroyed in the attack was located here and the building was never rebuilt.

As a result of the attack, tourism collapsed in Bali. The city and island did not fully recover from this event. On October 1, 2005, another attack shook the city again with several deaths. An explosive device exploded in a restaurant on the busy shopping street at the Matahari department store. There were further explosions at almost the same time in two beach restaurants in Jimbaran, about 15 kilometers away .

Buildings worth seeing

One of the few architectural sights in Kuta is the Buddhist temple Viharaya Dharmayana, founded in 1876 and built in the Chinese style, one of only five Buddhist temples in Bali. In 1982 the Dalai Lama visited him. Only 0.6% of the population of Bali are Buddhists, most likely Chinese, who have lived in Bali for a long time. Therefore, unlike most other Buddhist temples in Indonesia, the temple is colorfully designed in the Chinese style, with the colors red and yellow predominating.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis Xaverius was consecrated in 2006.
