Badung is a government district ( Kabupaten ) in the province of Bali , Indonesia . It covers an area of 418.52 km² and has 543,332 inhabitants (2010). The seat of government is Mengwi . The administrative district is divided into districts ( Kecamatan ).
The district stretches narrowly from the south coast of Bali to the interior of the island. Many tourist centers are part of it, including Denpasar Airport and the Bukit Peninsula in the south.
The temple Pura Luhur near Uluwatu, near the town of Pecatu, is worth seeing . It stands on the edge of a rock 70 m above the sea and is made of black coral rock.
history
The Pura Luhur Temple was built in the 11th century.
In Denpasar before 1906 was the center of the Principality of Badung. With the conquest by the Dutch military , the kingdom became extinct and Denpasar was given its current name.
On the southeast coast, in front of Denpasar, the Strait of Badung separates Bali from the small offshore island of Nusa Penida . This strait is 60 km long and 20 km wide. Here in February 1942 the naval battle took place in the Strait of Badung , in which the American-British-Dutch-Australian units ( ABDACOM ) were defeated by the Imperial Japanese Navy .
In 1992 the Denpasar district was separated from the Badung administrative district.
