Nusa Penida is an island southeast of Bali , Indonesia and an administrative area of the same name in the Klungkung district . It is about 20 kilometers long and about 12 kilometers wide.
Location and traffic
The Strait of Badung separates the island from Bali. Neighboring islands, which also belong to the administrative unit of Nusa Penida, are Nusa Lembongan in the northwest and Nusa Ceningan, the smallest island between the two.
Ferry connections exist to Sanur and Kusamba, a daily RoRo ferry operates to Padang Bai . Small boats commute between Lembongan and Nusa Penida several times a day.
The island's road network is thin. The roads are mostly single-lane and only partly asphalted.
history
The ancestors came from the neighboring island of Bali. In the past, the kings of Klungkung used the island as a prison island .
economy
The island is largely on limestone and has little rainfall. In contrast to Bali, rice only thrives in a few areas. Agriculture consists mainly of the cultivation of grain. The production of seaweed , which is exported to Japan and Europe, has established itself economically .
Diving tourism is particularly important for the small neighboring islands off the northwest coast, Lembongan and Ceningan . Compared to Lembongan, there is not yet that much tourist infrastructure, but there are small and modern hotels, especially in the north and east of the island.

nature
Compared to Bali, Nusa Penida has a drier climate. Therefore, the species composition also differs. It was therefore not clear whether the 2006 release of the threatened Bali star on the island would be a success. The population of the 37 originally released birds has increased significantly in the next few years, which suggests a positive breeding success.
