Sanur is a bathing beach near Denpasar in the south of Bali . The tourist resort with numerous upscale hotels is located southeast of the island's capital and extends from north to south over 5 km along the sea. The busy bypass road Jalan Ngurah Rai runs around the town in the west , so that the town center with the main shopping street Jalan Danau Tamblingan is spared from through traffic.

The northern part of Pantai Sanur was used as a landing site for the invasion during the Dutch intervention in Bali in 1906. During the Second World War, Sanur was invaded again when Japanese troops landed to occupy the island of Bali.

Worth seeing

The beach promenade of Sanur with its shady, sweeping trees is known all over Bali. From here there is an impressive view of the offshore island of Nusa Penida .

The Belgian painter Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpes (1880–1958) lived in Sanur from 1932 , and around 80 of his most important works are on display in his former home, now the Museum Le Mayeur . About 3 km north of Sanur, the Bali Orchid Garden is worth a visit.

Another attraction, albeit rarely visited by tourists, is in the south of Sanur on Jalan Danau Poso street next to the small, inconspicuous Hindu temple Pura Belangjong . It is a 1.77 m high stone column that was erected at the end of a short cul-de-sac under a protective roof behind glass. It is the oldest man-made and accurately datable artefact on the island of Bali. On the column there are inscriptions from the 9th century in Sanskrit and an ancient form of Balinese , from military victories from an era over 1,000 years ago act. A vase and a few other stone objects that could be from the same era as the column are also on display.
