Koyulhisar , in ancient times Anniaca , is a small town and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Central Anatolian province of Sivas . The city is located approx. 165 km by road (air line: approx. 90 km) northeast of the provincial capital Sivas . The city is located in the Kelkit Çayı valley not far from the E 80, about halfway between Amasya and Erzincan at the junction of a mountain road over the Pontic Mountains that leads to Ordu on the Black Sea . In the south of the city, the D855 trunk road (as Şükrü Baysal Cd.) Winds past (Ordu-Kangal).

district

Koyulhisar County is located in the north of the province and borders on Doğanşar County to the southwest , Suşehri County to the west and Zara County to the south . External borders exist with the provinces of Tokat in the west, Ordu in the north and Giresun in the east.

In addition to the district town, the district is divided into 44 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 238 residents. Aksu (699) and Sarıkaya (656 inh.) Are the two largest villages, 19 villages have more than 238 (= average) inhabitants. The population density is below the provincial value, the urban population is 28.24 percent.

history

In Roman times (province of Galatia ) the place was called Anniaca and was connected to Neokaisareia (today Niksar ) to the west downstream . The small Armenian capital Nicopolis is assumed to be near the present-day city of Suşehri (about 35 kilometers to the east).

In the eventful history after the rule of the Ilkhan (1256-1353), Koyulhisar was temporarily part of the Beylik von Sivas . The Emir of Niksar ruled in 1386, and a year later the place was under the influence of Kadi Burhan al-Din (r. 1382-1398), who was defeated in 1394 by Mutahharten, the Emir of Erzincan. In the following centuries, Koyulhisar was probably only a small market town with the residence of an emir. The settlement was located below the fortress hill and lived from its vegetable fields in the river plain. An increase in importance could have been connected with the caravans that traveled from the east towards Constantinople or Bursa on a side route along the Kelkit River.
