Ulaş is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Central Anatolian province of Sivas . The city is located approx. 39 kilometers by road (air line: approx. 35 km) south of the provincial capital Sivas . The city is on a railway line that connects Samsun with Malatya via Sivas . According to the city seal, Ulaş was raised to Belediye (municipality) in 1968 .
The district of Ulaş is centrally located in the province and borders in the north with the central ( Merkez ) district of the provincial capital, in the west with the district Altınyayla , in the south with the district Kangal and in the east in a narrow stretch with the districts Zara and Hafik .
The district of Ulaş was formed in 1991 by splitting off the eponymous Bucak from the central district of Sivas. At the last census before the split (1985), the Bucak Ulaş had a population of 15,266. This corresponded to a share of 5.74% of the district population at that time.
At the end of 2018, the district consisted of the district capital of 15 hamlets ( Mezra ) and 38 villages ( Köy ). The population of the villages ranges from 1028 ( Baharözü ) down to 15 ( Kurtlukaya ). 14 villages had 163 or more inhabitants (= average). The population density was below the provincial value, the urban population was 35.97 percent.
The district is crossed by the D260 ( Kayseri - Elazığ ) and D850 (Sivas – Malatya) roads, which also touch the district town.
