Gürün

Gürün is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Central Anatolian province of Sivas . The city is located about 137 kilometers south of the provincial capital Sivas on the upper reaches of the Tohma Çayı . According to the city seal, the place received the status of a municipality ( Belediye ) in 1869 .

The district of Gürün is the southernmost district of the province and borders in the north on the district Kangal , in the east on the province Malatya , in the south on the province Kahramanmaraş and in the west on the province Kayseri .

The trunk road D300 crosses the district in an east-west direction (Kayseri-Malatya), the trunk road D850 (Sivas-Malatya) meets the D300 coming from the north. A 57 km long section from the Kangal to the north ends in Gürün.

In addition to the district town, the district consists of 60 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 134 residents. The scale of the population ranges from 740 ( Tepecik ) down to 14 ( Kürkcü ), 16 villages have more than 134 (= average) inhabitants. The population density is less than a third of the provincial value, the urban population is 57.7 percent.

Attractions

About five kilometers northwest of the city at the entrance of the Suğul Kanyonu valley, through which the Tohma Çayı emerges from the mountains, the rock inscriptions of Gürün are on a steep slope . They are written in Luwian hieroglyphics and date from the 12th century BC. From Runtija, a ruler of the late Hittite kingdom of Melid .
