Şarkışla is the second largest city in the Central Anatolian province of Sivas and the capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) there. The city is about 84 kilometers by road (air line: about 68 km) southwest of the provincial capital Sivas on the Sivas-Kayseri railway line. In addition, the D260 and D851 highways intersect in the city. According to the city seal, the place received the status of a municipality ( Belediye ) in 1873 .
The district Şarkışla borders in the north to the county Yildizeli , on the east by the central ( Merkez ) County Sivas and the circle Altinyayla and southwest to the county Gemerek . In the north-west the province of Yozgat and in the south the province of Kayseri form the external border.
In addition to the district town, the district consists of two other Belediye (communities): Gürçayır (1,954) and Cemel (1,480 inhabitants). In addition, there are 95 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 131 residents in the district. Kızılcakışla (1,218), Samankaya (817), Gümüştepe (693) and Akçakışla (608 inhabitants) are the largest villages, 29 villages have more than 131 (= average) inhabitants. The population density of the district is below the provincial value, the urban (urban) population is 68.12 percent.
