Gölova ( Kurdish : Axvanîs ) is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the province of Sivas . The city is located about 40 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Sivas , north of the D100 ( E 80 ) and a reservoir ( Gölova Barajı - 4.85 km²). According to the city seal, the place was raised to a municipality ( Belediye ) in 1972 .
The county is the easternmost county in Sivas Province and borders Akıncılar County in the west. In the north the Giresun province forms the border, in the south and east the Erzincan province .
The district was split off in 1990 together with Akıncılar County from the eastern part of Suşehri County . Until then, the Bucak Gölova was part of this district and had 17,857 inhabitants at the last census before the change of area (1985), which corresponds to 12.81% of the population of the Suşehri district at that time.
At the end of 2018, the Gölova district consisted of the district town and 29 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 101 residents. The scale of the population ranged from 287 ( Karayakup ) down to 15 ( Sarıyusuf ), with 13 villages having more than 101 (= average) inhabitants. The population density was below the provincial value (of 23 inh. Per km²), the urban population was 29.81 percent.
