Gemerek is a town and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the province of Sivas . The place is about 100 km northeast of the provincial capital Sivas . The railway line from Sivas to Kayseri passes north of the city. According to the city seal, the place was raised to Belediye (municipality) in 1953 .
The district was established in 1953 and is located in the southwest of the province. It borders on Şarkışla County in the east, Çayıralan County ( Yozgat Province ) in the west, and Sarıoğlan , Akkışla and Pınarbaşı Counties (all Kayseri Province ).
In addition to the district town, it consists of two other municipalities ( Belediye ): Çepni (1,499) and Sızır (4,623 inhabitants). In addition, 34 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 228 residents belong to the district. Eğerci (1,035), İnkışla (613) and Yeniköy (576 inh .) Are the largest villages, ten of the villages have more than 228 (average) inhabitants. The population density is just below the provincial value, the urban population is 68.73 percent.
In 2004 a late Hittite stele was found in the hamlet of Kasımbeyli near the village of Hacıyusuf and is now exhibited in the Sivas Archaeological Museum .
