Altınyayla ( Turkish for golden plateau ) (until 1972 Tonus ) is a town and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Central Anatolian province of Sivas . The city is located about 83 km by road (air line: 58 km) south-southwest (SSW 203 °) of the provincial capital Sivas . The place was (according to the city seal) in 1972 raised to the rank of a municipality ( Belediye ).

The district is located southwest of the center of the Sivas Province. It borders on the Şarkışla district in the west, the central ( Merkez ) Sivas district in the north, the Ulaş district in the east, the Kangal district in the southeast and the Kayseri province in the south.
The district was formed in 1990 from the eastern part of the Şarkışla district and was a Bucak in this district until then . In the last census before the change of area (1985) this Bucak had 13,763 inhabitants, that was 20.47% of the population of the district at that time.
At the end of 2018, the district consisted of the district town (48.95% of the district's population), another Belediye ( Deliilyas , 2,123 inhabitants) and ten villages ( Köy ). The average number of residents per village is 263, the highest of the 17 districts in the province. The six villages of Başyayla (407), Doğupınar (390), Taşlıhüyük (348), Kızılhüyük (311), Tahyurt (303) and Gümüşdiğin (275 inhabitants) have more inhabitants than this average. The villages Güzeloğlan and Kürkçüyurt became Mahalles from the district town Altınyayla in 2018, the village Serinyayla became the 6th Mahalle to Deliilyas.
The population density of 14.2 inh. Per km² reaches two thirds of the provincial value (of 23.0), the urban (urban) population is 71.76 percent.
The town of Altınyayla is located on a 123 km long trunk road (D851), which leads from Yıldızeli (branch of the D200) via Şarkışla to Pınarbaşı (connection to the D300) in a north-south direction.
Before 2003, the Hittite stele of Altınyayla was found in an abandoned cemetery south of the city and is now exhibited in the Sivas Archaeological Museum .
