Kadi Burhan al-Din

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kadi Burhan al-Din Ahmed ( Azerbaijani Qazi Bürhanəddin , Turkish Kadı Burhaneddin ; * 1345 in Kayseri ; † 1398 ) was a vizier and Atabeg the ruler of the Anatolian Beyliks Eretna and Azerbaijani poet.

He was the son of Qādī Shams al-din Mehmed of Kayseri and belonged to the Turkmen Oghuz tribe of Salur . Burhan al-Din enjoyed a comprehensive religious and literary education, including in Egypt. In 1364 he returned to Kayseri and entered the service of Eretna. He was succeeded his father as Qādī of Kayseri in 1365. He was also active as a poet, writing mainly in Persian.

In 783 AH (1381/1382) he usurped the throne of Eretna in Sivas and claimed the title of Sultan for himself. Burhan al-Din justified his claim to the throne with his descent from the Seljuk Turks: his grandmother was the granddaughter of Kai Kaus II. The Sultanate of Eretna, which he inherited, had a large Turkmen and Mongolian population, but also many of the old urban centers the Rumeljuk and the Ilkhan . The sultanate with its persified court nobility resembled these older states more than the Turkmen Beyliks that arose in other parts of Anatolia.

The Qadi's 18-year reign was not peaceful. He challenged the Turkmen Karamanids and fought twice against Kötürüm Bayezid, the ruler of the Candaro ğlu in Kastamonu . In 1387 he was defeated by the Mameluks of Egypt. The Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I led an unsuccessful campaign against Burhan al-Din in 1391 with his Byzantine vassal Emperor Manuel II .

He found his death at the hands of the Ak Koyunlu in 1398, succeeded by his son Zayn al-'Abidin, who ruled for a short time between 1398 and 1399. His Türbe (mausoleum) is still in Sivas.

'Aziz ibn Ardashir Astarbadi, a companion of Kadi Burhan al-Din, wrote a Persian book about his rule called Bazm-u Razm , which was edited by Mehmet Fuat Köprülü in 1928 . An analysis and explanation can be found in HH Giesecke's work Das Werk des' Azīz ibn Ardašīr Astarābādi (Leipzig, 1940).
