Elizabeth Zachariadou

Elizabeth A. Zachariadou ( Greek Ελισάβετ Α. Ζαχαριάδου Elisavet A. Zachariádou ) (* 1931 ; † December 26, 2018 ) was a Greek historian with a focus on Ottoman and Byzantine studies .

life and work

In 1966 she married the Byzantinist Nikolaos Oikonomides (1934-2000), with whom she emigrated to Canada in 1967 as a result of the Colonel coup in Greece .

Zachariadou studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and was appointed to the University of Crete , where she taught Turkish Studies from 1985 to 1998. She participated in central works of medieval history, such as the Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium or the Lexicon of the Middle Ages and the New Cambridge Medieval History , but also in the Encyclopedia of Islam and the Ottoman World .

In 1990 she received an honorary doctorate from Ankara University . She also became a member of the Academia Europaea in 1993.
