Klungkung is a government district ( Kabupaten ) in the province of Bali , Indonesia . It covers an area of 315 km² and has 169,906 inhabitants (2004). The seat of government is the city of Semarapura .
The administrative district is divided into four districts ( Kecamatan ): Banjarankan , Dawan , Klungkung and Nusa Penida . Klungkung is easy to reach from Denpasar via the developed coastal road (since 2007). The islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan also belong to the administrative district of Klungkung .
Semerapura was once the center of Bali's most important kingdom. On April 28, 1908, it was the scene of a puputan . This is a fight (of the Balinese) against the colonial Dutch, in which death was preferred to surrender. The government district is famous for its Balinese paintings, most of which depict stories from epics such as the Mahabharata or Ramayana . These classic-style images come from the frescoes of the Balinese palaces and can also be found in the Puri Kerta Gosa (High Court Palace ) in downtown Semarapura.
