Nusa Tenggara ( Indonesian "Southeast Islands") is the Indonesian part of the Lesser Sunda Islands . This does not include East Timor , which is an independent state since of 2002. East Timor was occupied by Indonesia between 1975 and 1999, but formed its own province as Timor Timur .

The islands are east of Java . The Wallace Line runs between Bali and Lombok ; the fauna and flora are more related to that of Australia than that of Asia . The largest islands are Bali , Lombok , Sumbawa , Flores and Timor .

The islands are predominantly inhabited by Malays who, unlike the rest of Indonesia, are 91% Christian (60% Catholic, 31% Protestant); a further 8% are Muslims (immigrated from Java) and 0.6% are Hindus and a few minorities of Buddhists and animists.
