  • The State of Israel has seen several wars and two Palestinian uprisings since its inception . These armed conflicts mainly represent the military moment of the Middle East conflict .

    The following is a list of the violent clashes that the Israel Defense Ministry considers wars:

    1. War of Palestine , also Israeli War of Independence (November 1947 - July 1949): This war began with the Arab-Israeli civil war between Jewish and Arab militias at the end of the British mandate. After the establishment of the State of Israel in May 1948, the dispute turned into a regular war when the Arab states immediately declared war on Israel. The war ended with the 1949 Armistice Agreement between the states of Israel, Egypt , Lebanon , Syria , Iraq and Jordan . The negotiated armistice line is also known as the " Green Line ";
    2. Suez Crisis , also Sinai War (October 1956 - March 1957): Began with the attack on Egypt by troops from Israel, England and France to occupy the Sinai Peninsula . The attack was in response toEgypt'snationalization of the Suez Canal and its blocking to Israeli ships and the blockade of the Strait of Tiran to Israeli ships;
    3. Six Day War , alsoJune War (June 1967): Israeli attack on its neighbors Egypt, Syria and Jordan in order to forestall a feared attack by the Arab states after Egyptian troops marched on the border with Israel. Countries Iraq , Kuwait , Saudi Arabia and Algeria were also involved by troops and arms sales. The Six Day War resulted in the Israeli occupation of Gaza , Sinai, the West Bank and the Golan Heights ;
    4. War of Attrition (July 1967 - August 1970): A limited war between armed forces of Israel, Egypt, the USSR and the PLO . Initiated by Egypt toreversethe Israeli occupation of Sinai . The fighting ended in an armistice that left the fronts unchanged;
    5. Yom Kippur War , also October War (October 1973): Arab attack on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur with the aim of retaking the territories that Israel occupied in 1967. As a result of this war there was a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel ;
    6. Operation Litani (March 1978): Israeli army invaded Lebanon after a series of attacks, the coastal road attack being the immediate trigger;
    7. 1982 Lebanon War (June - September 1982): Started with the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon in response to regular attacks by terrorist groups operating from southern Lebanon. The Israeli army intervened in the Lebanese civil war ;
    8. 2006 Lebanon War (July - August 2006): Started as Israel's military response to the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah . The conflict gradually expanded, with Israel's primary goal being to weaken Hezbollah. This war ended in a truce brokered by the United Nations .
