The coastal road attack , also known as the Coastal Road Massacre in English-speaking countries, is a terrorist attack by the Palestinian Fatah on March 11, 1978 , in which 37 civilians, including 10 children, were killed and another 76 civilians were injured. It was the worst terrorist attack in Israeli history to date and, after a chain of attacks, the immediate cause of Operation Litani in Lebanon .

Course of events

On March 11, 1978, a Sabbath, eleven terrorists from Palestinian Fatah entered Israel by boat from southern Lebanon , led by nineteen-year-old Dalal al-Mughrabi . They ended up on a beach near Kibbutz Ma'agan Micha'el . First they murdered the US tourist Gail Rubin, a niece of the US Senator Abraham A. Ribicoff , who was taking pictures of the landscape there. They stopped a taxi and killed its occupants, shot and threw grenades at motorists on the four-lane coastal road. Then they attacked a bus with excursionists on the coastal road near Haifa and boarded a second on the way to Tel Aviv . After a chase, the bus was stopped at a roadblock by the (traffic) police.

There was a wild exchange of fire and dramatic scenes. The bus caught fire. Six terrorists and one Israeli police officer were killed, and 20 bus occupants were burned beyond recognition. An Israeli military unit, which had meanwhile been alerted, to which Ehud Barak was also a member, came to the scene late. Ehud Barak was filmed firing shots at al-Mughrabi and dragging her body across the street. Two armed Israeli soldiers who happened to be nearby (Schaul Weizman, son of then Defense Minister Ezer Weizman , and an army colonel friend) managed to arrest two terrorists. The police imposed a curfew on the northern part of Tel-Aviv and tried to track down three terrorists who were on the run.

It was later intensely debated why it had not been possible to get anti-terrorist police or military units to the scene in time. The approximately 30 police officers present were inadequately armed and completely overwhelmed with the situation.

Contribution to the Lebanon War 1982

The bloodbath was preceded by some similar actions by PLO fighters (see Avivim school bus attack , Ma'alot massacre ). As a direct reaction to the attack, the Israeli government ( Menachem Begin I cabinet ) decided to put an end to the threat posed by the PLO from Lebanon militarily. The coastal road attack thus triggered Operation Litani , which culminated in the first Lebanon war .

Assassin

Of the 11 attackers, 9 were shot. The two surviving terrorists, Khaled Abu Asba and Hussein Fayyad, were arrested. Both men were released in 1985 as part of a prisoner exchange after seven years in prison.

Heroization of the deed on the Arab side

As part of a 2008 release of some Israeli prisoners and the repatriation of the bones of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev , the remains of Mughrabi and other PLO fighters were also returned to Lebanon. The repatriation of the dead terrorists was celebrated triumphantly in Lebanon and by Hezbollah.

As early as March 2002, the (pro-Israel) 'Palestinian Media Watch' had found and criticized that the Palestinian Authority had used Mughrabi as a role model in training courses and, for example , had named a girls' school in Hebron after Dalal Mughrabi. Belgium, which financed the school, subsequently cut its financial support for the Palestinian Authority's educational system. Aid for schools was completely discontinued in September 2018.

Training programs for security agencies and summer camps had also been organized in the Palestinian Territories on behalf of the leader of the coastal road massacre.

According to the Middle East Media Research Institute , the Al-Jazeera television station dedicated a program to Dalal Al-Maghrabi in July 2008 and celebrated their participation in the coastal road attack as “heroism transcends the gender divide”.

The burned out remains of the bus can be found in the Egged Museum in Cholon . In addition, a memorial was erected at the site of the attack. The victims are named on name boards:
