The Police of Israel ( Hebrew מִשְׁטֶרֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל Mishṭeret Jisra'el ; Arabic شرطة إسرائيل, DMG Šurṭat Isrā'īl ) is a police institution of the State of Israel .

tasks

Like the police in other countries, the Israeli police are tasked with fighting crime, assisting the authorities in enforcing the law, including traffic rules, and providing assistance in preventive measures for the safety and protection of the population and thus the Maintain quality of life in the country. It reports to the Ministry of Public Security of Israel and was founded in 1948. The emergency number is 100.

The Israeli police force employs around 30,000 full-time workers. These are supported by 33,000 volunteers (as of 2016). Previously, more than 100,000 volunteers had worked for the police at times.

The regional breakdown corresponds to the six districts of Israel . The functional breakdown takes place according to the task fields in numerous departments such as Investigations & Intelligence (German for investigation and information ) or Policing and Security (German for control and security ).

There is also the border police ( Hebrew מִשְׁמַר הַגְּבוּל Mischmar HaGvul or shortמג״ב MaGa "V ), which among other things bears a special responsibility for the fight against terrorism and maintains the special unit JAMAM for this .

The head of the police ( Nitzav or Rav Nitzav ) is appointed by the Israeli government on the recommendation of the Minister for Internal Security . A deputy is at his side.

National Headquarters

The headquarters of the Israeli Police are the National Headquarters, located in Kiryat Menachem Begin in Jerusalem .

During the first two decades of the State of Israel, the headquarters of the Israeli police force was in Tel Aviv . As the size of the organization increased, a new staff building became necessary. After the Six Day War , a new location in East Jerusalem , between Scopus and the western part of the city, was chosen. The building, initially planned as a hospital during the period before the Six Day War under the Jordanian occupation of East Jerusalem, was redesigned by the architect Dan Eytan and opened in 1973. An attached second and larger building was added. The Ministry of Public Security building was later built next to the Israeli Police Headquarters.
