Jechidat Schaldag
The Jechidat Schaldag ( Hebrew יחידת שלדג 'Kingfisher Unit' ) (code name unit 5101) is an elite unit of the Israeli Air Force . It is used for counter-terrorism , hostage rescue and reconnaissance missions.
history
Jechidat Schaldag was founded by Sajeret-Matkal veterans in 1974 after the Yom Kippur War . Initially, only a Sajeret-Matkal reserve unit was to be established, which was to be assigned to the air force. From this idea, the Jechidat Schaldag was ultimately born.
organization
The unit is stationed at the Palmachim military airfield and consists of around 40 to 50 soldiers, who in turn work in groups of eight to nine soldiers. High demands are placed on applicants for the unit. The training lasts 22 months and, in addition to infantry and parachutist training, also includes special training in navigation and radio communications.
equipment
The standard equipment of a soldier of the unit is the M16 assault rifle or an M4A1 assault rifle with a matching attached M203 (grenade launcher) . Sig-Sauer or Glock 9mm pistols and Mauser SR-82/66 sniper rifles are used for special operations .
