Unit 33

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At Unit 33 ( Unit 33 , Gideonim in Hebrew הגדעונים) is a covert police unit that was founded in 1994 by Police Commissioner Asaf Hefet'z, who was previously responsible for setting up the JAMAM unit . Gideonim's primary mission was to act as a secret anti-terrorist force in East Jerusalem . The tasks have been gradually expanded so that it is now fully anti-terrorist and is used in other Arab cities and villages both inside and outside the borders of Israel. The unit is also used to fight crime. Since 1998, Gideonim has focused more on traditional police duties, which are more akin to the SWAT teams in the US. Due to the partial overlap of tasks and territorial missions, there was occasional friction between Unit 33 and JAMAM. This was complicated by the fact that one unit reports to the border guards and the other to the police . Unit 33's main weapons are the Colt Commando and CAR15 , Mini Uzi and the Baby Eagle (IMI Jericho 941) handguns.
