JAGAL (paramilitary unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The unit JAGAL ( Hebrew יגלJechidat Gvoul Lebanon יחידת גבול ליבנון = Lebanon Border Guard) is a police unit of the Special Forces, which was formed after the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000. Prior to this withdrawal, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had set up a security zone in southern Lebanon to prevent Lebanese civilians from approaching the border. Jagal's mission is to prevent terrorists from illegally crossing the border fortifications and smuggling weapons and drugs. Most of the unit's operations are covert and can take days or weeks in bad weather. The unit uses camouflage and field vehicles. Weapons used are the Colt Commando and the Baby Eagle (IMI Jericho 941) handguns.
