Palmachim ( Hebrew פלמחים) is a kibbutz in Israel , about 12 km south of Tel Aviv on the Mediterranean Sea . In 2004 the kibbutz had about 500 residents and 210 members. The population rose to 659 by 2018.
Palmachim was founded on April 11, 1949, almost a year after the establishment of the State of Israel (May 14, 1948), by 85 former Palmach underground fighters ; hence the name Palmachim was chosen.
The Palmachim Air Force Base is just 4 km south . There is a rocket launch site for the IAF and the Israel Space Agency . From this complex also be Shavit missiles with the ofeq - Satellite started ( 31 ° 53 '4 " N , 34 ° 40' 49" O ).
