- Brasília / Brazil : The 37th President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva takes office. He ran for the Labor Party and swore at his inauguration to dedicate himself to the fight against poverty, hunger and corruption. Guests at the ceremony include Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez , Cuban President Fidel Castro, and United States Trade Representative Robert Zoellick .
- Brussels / Belgium : The misleading terms “light” and “mild” may no longer be used on packaging for tobacco products and in their advertising in the European Union .
- New York / United States : Angola , Chile , Germany , Pakistan and Spain are new non-permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations .

- Aquitaine / France : The oil pollution in the Atlantic caused by the oil tanker Prestige reaches the French coast. The ship sank off the Galician coast in November 2002 with 77,000 tons of crude oil on board .
- Berlin / Germany : The can deposit system is introduced. The feared chaos in retail is not happening.
- Germany , France , United Kingdom : Flood alarms apply to large parts of Western Europe . In Germany z. B. the capacity of many tributaries of the Main exhausted.
- Ivory Coast : An advance party from the West African Economic Community's peace mission arrives in the north of the country to secure a ceasefire between government troops and rebel militias. The total strength of the force is said to be over 1,200 men. At her side are 2,500 soldiers from the French armed forces . The French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin travels to Ivory Coast to mediate between the conflicting parties.
