At the heart of the collection is an extensive block of works by Bruce Nauman , with further focus on minimalism and video art . The exhibition is controversial because the money from which the works of art were bought were also generated by slave labor in armaments factories during the Nazi era . In April 2005, only after massive criticism, Friedrich Christian Flick paid five million euros, 1% of his estimated private assets at the time, to the forced labor fund foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” .
In February 2008 Flick donated 166 works of contemporary art (parts of his collection; including works by Nam June Paik, John Cage, Dan Graham, Isa Genzken, David Weiss, Stan Douglas, Andreas Hofer, Bruce Nauman and Candida Höfer) to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation as a carrier for the Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart .
As part of the investigation into the Swiss-Leaks tax affair , it was discovered in 2014 that Flick had hidden around 60 million euros in the Swiss subsidiary of HSBC via mailbox companies .
