Monday 1st July 2002
- The Hague / Netherlands : The statute of the International Criminal Court comes into force after the quorum of 60 signatory states was reached on April 11th . Militarily and economically powerful states such as China , India , Russia and the United States have not yet ratified the statute. Before the Court of Justice begins its work, a decision has to be taken on its funding.
- Copenhagen / Denmark : Denmark takes over the presidency of the Council of the European Union from Spain . The Office of the Government of the EC receives Anders Fogh Rasmussen .
- Überlingen / Germany : In an aircraft collision , DHL flight 611 and Bashkirian Airlines flight 2937 collide at an altitude of 11,000 m above Lake Constance . 71 people are killed, including 49 children.
Saturday 6th July 2002
- London / United Kingdom : American Serena Williams wins the women's singles tournament at the Wimbledon Championships in tennis against her older sister Venus Williams , the 2000 and 2001 title holder .
Sunday 7th July 2002
- London / United Kingdom : Australian Lleyton Hewitt wins the men's singles tournament at the Wimbledon Championships by beating David Nalbandian from Argentina in three sets.
Friday July 12, 2002
- Isla del Perejil / Spain : The Moroccan armed forces occupy the 0.15 km² large parsley island in the Strait of Gibraltar and justify the step with better control of smuggling routes. Spain is responding by sending combat ships. Both countries claim the island as their territory .
Monday 15th July 2002
- New Delhi / India : Missile engineer Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam , who does not belong to any political party, emerges victorious from the presidential election in India .
Thursday July 18, 2002
- Berlin / Germany : Federal Defense Minister Rudolf Scharping ( SPD ) is dismissed by Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder nine weeks before the general election . Reports in Stern magazine about Scharping's dubious business dealings with the Frankfurt public relations entrepreneur Moritz Hunzinger brought the minister into distress.
- New York / United States : The United Nations meets the membership application of the Switzerland one.
Sunday July 21, 2002
- Magny-Cours / France : The German Michael Schumacher wins the French Grand Prix in the Ferrari F2002 and with this victory becomes the driver's world champion in the Formula 1 racing series for the fifth time in his career , regardless of the outcome of the remaining six races.
- New York / United States : The Security Council of the United Nations recommends to the General Assembly the inclusion of Switzerland in the organization.
- New York / United States : The third-largest phone company in the world MCI WorldCom is insolvent and asked in New York for bankruptcy protection after the company just last week a new credit over 2 billion US dollars has been granted.

- Munich / Germany : The European Patent Office revokes a patent on the cultivation of human and animal embryonic stem cells .
Friday July 26, 2002
- Washington, DC / United States : The majority of the MPs in the House of Representatives votes for the law commissioned by US President George W. Bush to create a United States Department of Homeland Security .
Saturday July 27, 2002
- Sknyliw / Ukraine : South-west of Lviv , a Sukhoi Su-27 fighter plane crashes into the crowd of the audience in the worst aircraft accident to date , where it explodes. At least 77 spectators die, 115 more are injured. The fact that the machine was traveling too close to the ground indicates human error on the part of the two pilots.
