A telephone company (official name in Switzerland: telecommunications service provider ) is the colloquial term for both network operators and mobile phone providers who operate on the market as telecommunications companies . Before the liberalization of the telephone markets, both businesses were operated in most countries by a monopoly , often state-owned.

Telephone companies often specialize in either landline or cellular (they are called cellular companies ).

In addition to the classic voice service, telephony , the services offered today also include the provision of remote data transmission options , fax and connection to the Internet .

Due to the convergence of the access networks towards a next generation network , Internet service providers , cable companies and VoIP providers are increasingly appearing as providers of voice telephony and thus telephone companies in addition to the classic fixed-line and mobile network providers .
