China Telecom Corp. Ltd. is the largest telecommunications provider in the People's Republic of China . The company is active in 31 provinces and has been listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKSE: 728) and the NYSE (NYSE: CHA) since 2002 . Trading is also possible on German stock exchanges via ADR (FRA: ZCHA).

It was originally a state-owned monopoly operation. The northern business activities of this organization were separated in 2002 and transferred to China Netcom .

The company had 216 million subscribers in April 2008 and announced on June 2, 2008 that it would acquire infrastructure from China Unicom for an additional 43 million cellular customers for 110 billion RMB . With 35 million connections, China Telecom controls around 62% of Chinese broadband connections .
