China Unicom ( Chinese  中国 联通 ; full name China United Network Communications Group Co., Ltd. , Chinese 中国 联合 网络 通信 集团 有限公司) is a state-owned telecommunications company in the People's Republic of China .

52.6% of China Unicom (Hong Kong) is owned by the state-owned China Unicom (BVI) Ltd. and China United Network Communications Limited. The remaining shares are traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (SEHK: 0762) and on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: CHU). The shares are listed in the Hang Seng Index and the China Traded Index .

China Unicom was established as a state-owned corporation on July 19, 1994 by the Ministry of Electronics Industry (now the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology).

The company started out as a provider of wireless paging and GSM . It currently offers a comprehensive range of services such as B. CDMA2000 mobile networks, long-distance and local calls , data communication , Internet connections and IP telephony .

China Unicom and China Netcom merged in early 2009.
