Bank of Communications ( BoCom or BoComm , Chinese 交通銀行 , Pinyin Jiāotōng Yínháng ) is a Chinese company with headquarters in Shanghai . The company is listed in the SSE 50 stock indices on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Hang Seng Index on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange . The company employs around 50,000 people.
Company history
Bank of Communications was founded in 1908. In the early days, the company grew to become one of the first few large national banks in China to issue banknotes. On November 27, 1934, the first branch was opened in Hong Kong. In 1949 the company was split into two divisions. From one part of the company, the Bank of Transportation ( Chiao Tung Bank ) emerged in Taiwan , which merged with the International Commercial Bank of China and assumed the name Bank of China . In 1971 this company was privatized in Taiwan and the Mega International Commercial Bank was created .
In mainland China, the Bank of Communications developed and became one of the five largest banks in China. The Bank of Communications has 2,625 branches in China and locations in New York City, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Seoul, London and Frankfurt.
In January 2005 the British bank HSBC acquired 19.9 percent of the Bank of Communications, at the end of 2008 its stake was 19.15 percent (9,381,484,261 shares).
