history

AIA dates back to June 2, 1919, when Cornelius Vander Starr founded American Asiatic Underwriters (later American International Underwriters) in Shanghai . Starr eventually expanded his business around the world. On January 21, 1939, Starr moved his main office from Shanghai to New York City after the Japanese invasion of China and again on April 5, 1949 with the communist takeover of mainland China. The Asian AIA became a subsidiary of the New York-based American International Group (AIG).

On December 4, 2009, AIG sold preferential shares in two newly formed subsidies, the American International Assurance Company (AIA) and the American Life Insurance Company (ALICO), to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to reduce its debt by 20%.

AIA planned to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on April 3, 2010 . However, Prudential plc , a UK financial services and securities company, announced on March 2, 2010 that it would buy AIA for $ 35.5 billion. After the takeover failed, AIA went public in October 2010, with a volume of 159.08 billion Hong Kong dollars (20.51 billion US dollars) making it the world's third largest IPO at that time.

On October 7, 2012, AIA acquired the Malaysian subsidiaries of ING Group for a present value of EUR 1.336 billion (USD 1.73 billion).

On December 21, 2012, AIG sold its entire 13.69% stake in AIA.

Since June 2, 2013, AIA has concluded an exclusive all-finance agreement with Citibank , which includes 11 AIA markets in the Asia-Pacific region, namely Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia.

In August 2013, AIA became the official shirt partner of the Premier League football club Tottenham Hotspur . The contract was extended in 2017 and again in 2019; The term is the end of the season 2026/2027. The company currently pays 55 million euros per season.
